Bringing everything together

In this module we have explored the topic of instructional design for online learning, providing an overview of several models, tools, and techniques that can be used to enhance and improve online teaching and learning.

  • We started by looking at the ICCEE Model of instructional design, which takes us through the stages of Identify, Create, Confirm, Engage, and Evaluate.
  • We then discussed Empathy Mapping to help us better understand our students’ needs and existing competencies, and the Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes, and Values grid that serves as a way to explore, discuss, and determine learning goals.
  • We also explored several tools and techniques for Confirming and Evaluating our instructional designs, and the SAMR model to help us enhance online teaching and learning by thinking about how technology can enrich the learning experience.
  • Finally, we looked at the importance of finding methods that work for you as a teacher and help you deliver lessons that are engaging, memorable, and effective for your students.

With online education, as in all aspects of teaching and learning, the most important thing is finding methods that work for you as a teacher and help you deliver lessons that are engaging, memorable, and effective for your students.

Reflection Questions

Having looked at a whole range of tools, techniques, models, and approaches that can help inform online instructional design, it is useful to pause and reflect a little on the bigger picture of delivering great learning experiences for our students. Some questions that might help you expand your thinking on this could be:

What would most help you in your use of technology in online teaching?

How can you best support your students in online learning environments?

What would you love to learn how to do?

What are the biggest opportunities that online learning can offer?
