Learn to use technology in your favour

After getting through this section, we hope you will become enthusiastic about some of the nice things the online environment has to offer. If you aren’t already, of course.

Online platforms give you the following opportunities:

  • to automatically have the list of participants and (for some platforms) statistics of engagement for each student
use tec1
  • to ask / answer questions on the chat (e.g. get a large number of answers to a question and have the freedom to process the responses whenever you decide)
  • to automatically save the chat and analyse / mark answers later
  • to encourage students to use the chat during your presentation (without specifically interrupting verbally), and not just listen passively
  • to mute the noisy participants and to “give the microphone” to specific people
  • to set rules for interaction and see reactions in real time (e.g. a student that “raises their hand” will be shown on top of the window)
use tec2
  • by using the simultaneous answer system, you ensure that they understood a question or have the right answers in real time
  • immediately send students in breakout rooms where they can work in pairs, teams of 3, 4, or whatever number and combination of students you decide
  • send instructions or resources (e.g. links) to the whole class or to a certain student in particular
  • use collaborative tools where they can work simultaneously (mind maps, jamboards etc)
  • ask them to fill in google forms that instantly give you results and stats for quantitative questions and centralised sheets with all answers
  • worth mentioning - having the class from your favourite room, without needing to leave your home

Reflection questions:

Your turn, can you find 3 more opportunities? Which ones do you need to know more about? Can you find a resource person or a source of information to already start implementing?
