Presenting in front of the camera

Considering that you have already prepared the environment and checked your connection, lights, microphone and camera, you are ready to become the focus of your class.

There are several things you might need to keep in mind in order to establish and maintain a good communication with the students:

  • Make sure you look at the audience. Look at the camera and address directly to the students, so as to create the powerful feeling of communication. Do now look lateral or down.
  • Position yourself and remain in front of the camera and the light.
  • Keep a positive facial expression and encourage gestures. Use hand gestures, nod and signal attention and smile a lot.
  • Control and pay attention to your voice. Use an adequate rhythm, understandable to the audience. Make pauses to help the students keep up. Use tone variation from time to time and accentuate the notions you need to focus on.

  • Keep a clear message, with short sentences and using a direct and simple language.
  • Give examples, summaries and underline the most important statements.
  • Use video and audio support resources to vary the content and keep the attention present but use them in support and not as a duplicate to your message. Make sure each of your visuals supports your key points.
  • Involve participants in communication. Ask questions in order to keep them attentive and also check that they are following.
  • Keep track of time and remember to have an opening, a middle and a conclusion.
Activity (1)

The most important things for a good presentation are preparation and practice. If you know what you want to say and prepare it to practice you can improve not only the content but the voice, the body language, the needed visuals.
