Throughout this module, we will make use of basic theory and models, aiming at giving you ideas on how you can enhance your online teaching (and, actually, not only - a great part of what you read here can very well be adapted to face-to-face teaching as well).
First model on our list - LEARNING STYLES. The way a student receives information best is determined by their sensory learning preferences. There are, thus, 3 types of learners:
Visual learners: they need to see pictures, diagrams, schemes, they learn best from visual methods of teaching. They like to read, see the written information, take notes.
Auditory learners: they need to hear information, they repeat it in their heads, they like to listen to you talking. They memorise through discussions. They need spoken instructions and, sometimes, explanations for written information.
Kinesthetic learners: they learn by touching and doing things, they remember things by using hands, bodies, physical movement. They need to write or draw what they learn, touch and move things.
Our second model to keep in mind - the 3H framework (hands, heart, head).
The 3 key areas of this model, that need to be equally taken into account when preparing a lesson, are:
The social - affective area (heart) is related to socialising, empathising, communicating, building relations in the classroom.
The intellectual - cognitive area (head) is related to thinking, solving problems, learning new things.
The intellectual - cognitive area (head) is related to thinking, solving problems, learning new things.
Reflection time:
For each of the above models, list your ideas that can support you in meeting students needs, increase engagement and maximise learning.
Take into account that students can read, write, draw, listen, speak, exercise, gesture, build… and the list of verbs related both to learning styles and the 3H framework can go on.
