What is and what isn’t an energizer?

There are several types of exercises (icebreakers, warm-ups, openers, brainteasers, motivators, tension reducers) which have, more or less, the same goal - preparing students for another session in the process of learning. In the case of icebreakers, they also have the role of making members of a new group feel more comfortable with each other.

But this e-learning is not about differentiating these types of exercises, but practically learning about them. So we will talk, simply, about energizers.

Why do we need energizers?

  • To maintain an adequate level of energy which is essential for a quality learning process;
  • To avoid a show of "long faces";
  • To have a small break without actually having a break - with the help of an energizer we spice up sessions, energise participants, re-focus on what we're doing, or achieve a smooth transition from one moment to another;
  • To guide participants in a transition from a section of the lesson to another, ensuring they will be “all in”.

Remember - an energizer is just an energizer. It will help students be more active and focus on you. And this is a great way to start teaching something for which you need all the attention you can get.
